Sleep Problems & Heart Palpitations – How a Change in Diet and Chinese Medicine Can Help

Sleep Problems & Heart Palpitations – How a Change in Diet and Chinese Medicine Can Help

Do you feel restless in the evening and have difficulties falling asleep? Do you maybe feel anxious, dizzy and get easily scared? Then it could be possible that you suffer from a heart blood deficiency.

Traditional Chinese medicine can help alleviate the symptoms through the use of acupuncture and herbal treatments. However, by examining our diets and eliminating some of the culprits whilst increasing the intake of foods that benefit the heart can lead to a renewed healthier physical state.

The heart is considered as the emperor of the body which hosts the spirit also called « Shen ». According to the “Yellow Emperor’s Classic”—the oldest known writings in Chinese medicine—the strength of the Shen is fundamental to good health: “If Shen is strong, the body will be strong; if we lose Shen, the body will perish.” Spirit and Shen are closely linked. For example the spirit can be disturbed by extreme emotions, negative and positive ones and then disturbs the Shen.

Besides treating this condition at my TCM practice with acupuncture and herbs, it is essential to change nutrition and life style habits to attain and maintain a healthy state again. What are the symptoms and reasons for this condition? Which foods can improve it?

The symptoms of a heart blood deficiency

  • Palpitations (more pronounced in the evening)
  • Problems to fall asleep
  • Insomnia
  • Poor memory
  • Mild anxiety
  • Dream disturbed sleep
  • Easily startled
  • Tiredness, exhaustion
  • Scanty or absent periods (amenorrhoea)
  • Paleness

The reasons which lead to it

  • Consuming spicy foods regularly
  • Eating too less and nutrient-poor foods
  • Having too much meat, especially deep-fried and grilled
  • Constant stress and pressure of time
  • Drinking too much alcohol and black tea
  • Smoking
  • Chronic diseases
  • Severe blood loss e.g. childbirth, after an operation, etc.
  • Chronic worry and anxiety disturbs the shen
  • Dietary insufficiencies and over-thinking which causes spleen qi deficiency that can cause blood deficiency

The foods that help

For the successful treatment of a heart blood deficiency it is important to avoid everything what harms the heart (see above under reasons) and to eat the right foods.

Foods that benefit the heart

  • Endive
  • Quinoa
  • Amaranth
  • Egg yellow
  • Oats
  • All kinds of berries
  • Dates
  • Black olives
  • Black sesame seeds
  • Beetroot
  • Parsley
  • Octopus, oyster and sardines
  • Flaxseed oil
  • Mung beans
  • Wheat berry

It takes some time to rebuild heart blood and it is necessary to eat these food regularly and adapted to the season. To strengthen your heart and to support the process you should focus on maintaining a positive outlook, practicing benevolence and compassion, getting enough rest, seeking peace and tranquility, meditating and going out in nature.

Liver Detox and 6 tips to Support your Liver

Liver Detox and 6 tips to Support your Liver

How to Detox your Liver Naturally

The liver, associated with spring in Chinese Medicine, is the largest organ of your body and is always busy rinsing your body of toxins and performs over 500 functions. It’s responsible for an astounding variety of life-sustaining and health-promoting tasks. Some of the very important jobs are detoxifying your blood, producing the bile needed to digest fats, balancing cholesterol and your hormones and storing vitamins, iron and minerals.

It is doing a big job! That is why it is so necessary to keep this overachieving organ in optimal shape. The power of your liver to regenerate is incredible. But before we get to the smooth liver detox, let us take a look what Chinese Medicine has to say about this amazing organ and how your body reacts if the liver is in imbalance.

The Liver in Chinese Medicine

The liver regulates Qi, the vital energy, that sustains life and stores blood. It carries Qi around the body and supports the functioning of our organs, limbs and tissues. While you’re awake, the liver controls the flow of blood out into the muscles and sinews during activity, and brings it back to the liver during night to clean it. The liver controls as well the tendons and sinews, opens into the eyes and manifests in the nails. On a physical level it gives us strength and flexibility.

It expresses itself in a free flow of emotions and the emotion of anger is associated with it. Suppressing your feelings or uncontrolled outbursts, lead to an imbalance of the liver energy. When it is in balance, you can express your feelings adequately.

The liver also houses the “Hun”, or soul, which gives us our consciousness and sense of purpose. This spirit is as well responsible for loving kindness, awareness of suffering, empathy, compassion, and tolerance. If the liver energy is strong, you will have a clear overview of your life and you are able to plan, focus and make decisions.

Some signs of bad liver health are bloating, gas, constipation, haemorrhoids, problems to digest fat, skin and eye problems, inability to loose weight, high blood pressure, yellowish skin or eyes, migraines and headaches, fertility problems, muscular weakness and insomnia. The menstruation is also greatly effected by it and keeps your menstrual cycles running smoothly but when in imbalance shows up in absent or infrequent menstrual periods, excessive, prolonged or shortened bleeding, painful periods and clots. Emotionally it can express in unexplained irritability, moodiness, anger, bitterness, unkindness and impatience.

Fortunately, you can help improve your liver’s functioning.

How to do a smooth Liver Detox

While doing a liver detox it is important to reduce stress and demanding physical workouts. Try to create more time for doing the things you love and that benefit your well-being e.g. taking walks, participating in a yoga class, seeing friends, reading a book, just to name a few.

Start your day by drinking a cup of hot water with some freshly squeezed lemon and a teaspoon of unpasteurized apple cider vinegar. For the rest of the day continue drinking cooked water and/or a herbal tea with a mix of the following liver supporting herbs: dandelion, milk thistle, parsley, chamomile, licorice, lemon balm, yarrow, orange blossom. A cup of green tea per day is also supportive.

Your breakfast can be a vegetable soup or if you crave for something sweet a cooked porridge is great as well e.g. mix millet and quinoa and add an apple or pear with some dried fruits. At the end of the cooking process you can season it with cardamom and add some nutritional yeast flakes.

At lunch you can eat a vegetable soup, a rice-vegetable dish or another vegan dish. It is important that it is steamed, cooked or out of the oven. Avoid any fried food. Let your dish be accompanied by a salad with endives, rocket, dandelion or field salad with fresh herbs like basil, parsley, watercress, dill or chive. As a dressing, mix fresh lemon with olive or sesame oil.

Your cooked dinner should be eaten before 7pm, as after this time the digestion slows down.

For any hunger in between you can eat an apple or some slices of cucumber.

If you need some inspiration what to cook you can find here some ideas: Recipes

Choose foods which are especially good for your liver:

  • Grains like amaranth, quinoa, brown rice, wild rice
  • Vegetables like green veggies (e.g. artichokes, asparagus, celery, dandelion, kale, brussel sprouts, spinach, broccoli, garden sorrel, leek), fresh green herbs, beets, sweet potatoes, turmeric
  • Legumes (soak them overnight so that they are easier digestible) like white, kidney and lima beans
  • Fruits like lemons, limes, strawberries (clean the blood), berries

Start the detox for a week and if you feel well, you can extend it. You should eat vegan during this time and after finishing the detox, introduce other foods step by step. Slight headaches, skin irritations and slight changes in the digestion are normal signs of the detox. However, if you are not feeling well or you experience unexpected discomforts then please stop the detox. When you suffer from any illnesses, then consult your practitioner or doctor before starting.

To sustain a proper liver function you should reduce or avoid the following things in the future

  • Excess dietary fats, especially trans fat
  • Refined sugar
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Refined carbohydrates, including white rice and products made from white flour
  • Soy protein isolates, found in many protein energy bars and processed soy foods
  • Regular and too much alcohol, over-the-counter drugs and caffeine

6 Tips to support the Liver

1. Acupressure point liver 3 “Tai Chong”
One of the most popular points in Chinese medicine. If you are feeling cranky, irritable or angry, this point has a calming effect. It is also used for menstrual disorders, headaches, dizziness, detoxification, eye issues and promotes the flow of Qi in the body. Just to name a few of the wonderful effects of this point.

You find it on the dorsum of the foot in a depression distal to the junctions of the 1st and 2nd metatarsal bones, slide your thumb up until you feel a depression about 1/2 inch up. Massage or press it.

2. Meditate daily
It is a process of training your mind to focus and redirect your thoughts. You can use it to increase awareness of yourself and your surroundings. Regular meditation helps to release stress, calms the mind and improves your concentration significantly. Here you can find different meditations with different length: Mindful Meditations

3. Essential oils for your well-being
They are natural remedies used for various conditions and also can improve the health of skin, hair and body. Inhaled, added in a drink or applied on the skin, they can help with emotional and physical problems. Lemon supports the cleansing process, wild orange benefits a healthy immune system and promotes a free flow of liver Qi and lavender has calming and relaxing qualities. You can find here more information of how they can be used and benefit your health: doTerra

4. Move your liver Qi
To support a smooth flow of liver Qi, you can try Qigong or another energy practice to get your Qi flowing and release toxins from your body. You’ll feel lighter and less tense in mind-body-spirit.

5. Let it out and free your emotions!
Shout or break things (in a safe space) to release your frustrations and anger. I can suggest balloons, bubble wrap, or pillows. Also shouting in free nature can be a big relief (my personal favourite).

6. Sleep
According to Chinese Medicine, it is crucial to sleep latest at 11pm in order to support the organs gallbladder and liver in their function. This is because the gallbladder’s most active time is from 11pm to 1am and the liver’s “repair time” starts at 1am for two hours.

How to Improve your Fertility Naturally

How to Improve your Fertility Naturally

Many couples having fertility issues or trouble sustaining a pregnancy, decide to receive help from hormonal treatments in reproductive health care. Some also turn to holistic medicines known as alternative, natural, integrative and complementary medicines. Natural therapies have been used for centuries all over the world to improve fertility and they are gaining more and more attention today. The aim of natural therapies is to stimulate the healing power of the body and treat the underlying cause of disease to restore health.

How can natural medicines support the fertility process?

It is important to understand that conceiving is not only a physical process but implies a huge mind-body connection. Besides the absence or unbalance of spermatozoids or ovules, the most common reasons for infertility are related to stress, sleep deprivation, weight issues and cycle confusion, to name a few. Conception is a hugely complex hormonal process (and still to be fully understood) and therefore some imbalances in your body will have an important impact on the success rate.

Natural medicines help restore balance, to create a healthy properly functioning body. This in turn makes conceiving possible, leads you through a good pregnancy, and above all aids in the development of a healthy baby.

In the conception phase, the therapy would typically include advice on changes in lifestyle and diet, use of vitamins and minerals, acupuncture and if necessary herbal medicines and Bach flower essences. It is a gentle approach, non-invasive, and has no side adverse effects. It can be done solely or in addition to a hormonal therapy.

How can Traditional Chinese Medicine help with conceiving?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) sees a person as an energy system in which body and mind are unified, each influencing and balancing the other. Diagnosis and treatment in TCM are based on studying the purpose, flow, and impact of energy in the body. It includes acupuncture, Chinese herbs, moxibustion and cupping, to name a few. The basic foundation for it is that Qi, or life energy, flows through the body. This energy flows in channels also known as meridians that connect all of our organs. According to Chinese medicine theory, illnesses and imbalances arise when the flow of Qi in the meridians becomes unbalanced or is blocked.

In the treatment of fertility issues, acupuncture is said to

  • regulate the female cycle which is a precondition for conceiving.
  • balance hormones, so that ovulation happens or is increased.
  • improve the quality of sperm cells (quantity, motility, morphology) and ovules.
  • support the blood supply to the uterus.
  • increase the thickness of the endometrium.
  • lower stress and anxiety.
  • help with sleeping disorders and weight problems.
  • reduce the side effects of hormonal therapy.
  • improves the chances of successful implantation on the day of embryo transfer.
  • overcome sexual difficulties e.g. impotence, pain during intercourse, etc.

Why is optimising the nutrition important to boost the chances?

Dietary considerations based on Chinese medicine for men and women can significantly increase the chances for a pregnancy. A healthy digestive system allows nutrients to be absorbed and used well. Optimal nutrition provides a high quality of sperm and an optimal ovarian environment for the eggs during the maturation process. It also contributes to an ideal condition in the uterus for implantation of the embryo and development of the baby. Other factors that will be addressed include: being overweight or underweight, digestive issues such as reflux, bloating, bowel disorders, chronic constipations, cravings or low and high appetite. Chinese medicine offers dietary advice with regard to your individual constitution and situation. Sometimes vitamin and mineral supplements will be added.

How can Bach flower essences support the process?

Often while trying to conceive a myriad of emotions are experienced: depression, anxiety, worry, sadness, resentment, jealousy and fear. Dr Bach, a physician and homeopath, discovered and developed a system of 38 flower essences in which each flower relates to a particular characteristic or emotional state. You will receive a unique blend of a combination of flower essences that will address your personality, your emotional needs and goals.

Why do meditation and yoga increase your chances to conceive?

Meditation is the process of quieting the mind through different methods e.g. single-pointed concentration and breath techniques. Scientific studies proved that regular meditation lessens stress, worries, anxiety and supports balanced hormone levels in men and women. Through regular yoga practice cortisol levels will  decrease and consequently the monthly level of luteinizing hormones will increase, leading to healthy ovulation.

Yoga postures are selected based upon your personal condition, and can aid e.g. to balance hormone levels, to improve the blood circulation of the uterus and to support the healing of digestion and sleeping disorders. These postures are a great way to prepare your body for pregnancy as well as lead you through pregnancy in optimal shape. Practicing yoga can also reduce or avoid e.g. miscarriages, the retention of water, tensions and pain syndromes.

What can you expect from a first consultation?

During your first appointment we look at your personal situation, medical history and lifestyle habits. Then follows a treatment and a final discussion about how to proceed and whether herbs and advice on nutrition and lifestyle are necessary.

(PMS): Treating Menstruation Problems with Chinese Medicine

(PMS): Treating Menstruation Problems with Chinese Medicine

Spring has finally arrived and following my last article “Liver cleanse – Detox your liver with the right foods and 6 other ways” where the liver was the central role, we still stay with this organ which is always affected when menstrual imbalances exist resulting in premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Every month, millions of women experience different premenstrual symptoms that can make life difficult for 7-14 days before their period begins. Common signs of premenstrual syndrome include on the psycho-emotional level: mood swings, irritability, aggressiveness, depressions, fears and listlessness. On a physical level: tiredness, headaches, heat waves, sweating, bloating, acne, tender breasts, constipation, diarrhoea and water retention. PMS shows up differently and normally the signs disappear when the period starts. Some have such severe symptoms that they are already afraid of the next cycle.

Reasons can be found in hormonal imbalances like an estrogen excess or a prolactin or serotonin deficiency, as well as problems with the thyroid. Stress, lack of exercise, medications and defective regulation of the vegetative nervous system are causes as well.

Chinese medicine traces premenstrual syndrome symptoms down to a stagnation of liver Qi. The liver stores the blood and regulates the smooth flow of Qi in the body, and is usually the organ involved in menstrual problems. When liver Qi flows smoothly, the menstrual cycle runs also smooth. When the liver Qi becomes stagnant, it can make menstrual flow heavy and blocked and premenstrual symptoms appear. If the Qi stagnation turns to blood stagnation, pain can become more intense and localised.

Chinese Medicine and PMS

Every woman has the chance to improve the condition by following a proper diet, exercising regularly and reducing stress on an emotional level as well as in lifestyle habits. Dietary therapy involves avoiding foods and drinks that stagnate the liver Qi or heat the liver up. All sweets, strong spices such as hot peppers, stimulants like coffee and cola, alcohol and deep-fried foods should be avoided, especially up to 14 days before the period starts. Reduce meat and cow milk products during this period. If a woman suffers from strong emotional disturbances, conversations with a psychologist can support the process.

Acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion and herbal treatments will help to relieve premenstrual syndrome symptoms. The treatment takes at least three months to fully address the hormonal irregularities and subsequently can be prolonged if needed.

The classic Chinese herbal formula for liver qi stagnation is Xiao Yao Wan (Ease Form). It promotes the smooth flow of liver Qi and consequently strengthens the spleen Qi. However, Chinese herbals should only be taken after consulting a therapist for Chinese medicine, to ensure it is the right formula for your situation.

Some western herbs that are addressed for this pattern can vary from chamomile, sage, lavender, shepherd’s purse, lady’s thistle and lady’s mantle.

Acupuncture is a very efficient therapy for premenstrual syndrome. Some powerful acupuncture and acupressure points are, for example:  liver 3, large intestine 4, spleen 4 and 6, pericardium 6, gall bladder 34 and 41,  Yintang, conception vessel 6 and stomach 30. Acupressure Points

Yoga is a gentle and great way to help with PMS. Please see one my recent posts on facebook where you get an idea which yoga poses aid the liver Qi
